Lidle Dies in Plane Crash

A plane registered to Yankees Pitcher Cory Lidle collided with an apartment building in Manhattan today. Lidle is believed to have been flying the plane, and has been declared dead by a city official. His passport was found in the street below. Lidle was 34.

Lidle's major league career spanned nine years and included stints with the Mets, Devil Rays, Athletics, Blue Jays, Reds, Phillies and Yankees. He was 82-72 with a 4.57 ERA on his career.

Our deepest sympathies go out to Lidle's family and friends, and the entire Yankees and Major League Baseball community.

This is the first death of an active player since Cardinal pitcher Darryl Kile died of a sudden heart attack in June of 2002.

I am sympathetic to Lidle's family, but this has become too much. My blog at http://cavalier92.blogspot.com covers my thoughts, but I just can't beleivet this guy has suddnely become a guy who walked on waterr.

I don't think anything in this post romanticizes Lidle's career. It simply presents the facts as a symbol of respect. If I wanted to mask any signs of bad pitching, I wouldn't have posted his ERA. I simply am reporting the saddest news in the baseball community all year, no matter how good a pitcher he was.
